Topic Eleven: The Global Appeal of Japanese Animation Movies by Miyazaki

Discussion Topic Eleven (2009/12/14~12/21):

Discussion Topic:

(1)What are the special attributes of Miyazaki's animation movies that have helped to appeal to global audiences and attract people in all ages and all walks of society?

(2) Please choose an animation movie produced by Miyazaki and then point out the reasons why (1)Taiwanese people and (2) people around the world love to see this film so much.

Some remarks by Vinia to help you organize your thoughts~

I.  Some of the best known animation films produced by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli:

Ponyo (2009)
Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
Spirited Away (2002)
Princess Mononoke
Porco Rosso
Kiki's Delivery Service
The Valley of the Wind
My Neighbor Totoro

II. Who is/are your favorite character(s) in Miyazaki's animation movies produced by Ghibli Studio?

I like May-chan from "My Neighbor Totoro" the best, but I admire
Nausicaa's courage in "The Valley of the Wind."  I think the Little Wtich Ki-ki is my role model as a career woman.  However, to search for happiness as someone who is true to him/herself, I think Sophia from "Howl's Moving Castle" wins my heart. As to the best male character, I prefer Howl, who is learning, transforming, and growing matured in the story, as what has happened to the little girl in "Spirited Away."  In short, I like them all!

III. Which animation film is your favorite production by Miyazaki and Studio Glibli?

"My Neighbor Totoro" remains one of the most popular films suitalbe for viewers of all ages in the family. The loving and caring relationship between people and natural creatures re-asserts a sense of security in human life that many people have found lacking in their childhood and even in their entire adult life.

Many people in my generation and yours grew up watching this film during family reunions, especially on Lunar Chinese New Year  in Taiwan.
The surprising encounters with  magical and powerful creatures, such as Totoro and the Cat Bus, who willingly offer their timely assistance to those who believe in them, have become a dream that many children and adults would hang on to in the time of crisis.

"Spirited Away" is the first foreign movie production to win the Oscar Best Animation Film Award.  In addition to the dazzling visual images and touching music, this film has a flawless story that appeals to and conforms to people's expectation of a heroic quest: the departure for adventure, the inner growth in conquering challenges, and a return to where the story has started.  I think Miyazaki and his colleagues did a great job in following this traditional theme in western literature, which has been well known in western civilization since the Greek epic "The Oddysey. "

"Howl's Moving Castlte" is an adaptation from an English children/teenagers' novel by Diana Wynne Jones (1986), but Miyazaki and his colleagues did largely modify the characters and the plot so that the movie version was really a creative re-invention of Jones' story.  Personally, I enjoy this film better than "Spirited Away" because the characterization of the heroine Sophie embodies a problem for all people living in a cultural context with high traditional restraints:  the quest for one's self-identity and the courage to be true to one's heart.  The same transformation also happens to Howl, the young irresponsible wizard who initially did not have the courage to face himself or the maturity of being an adult.  The maturing process presented in these two characters is really intriguing.  By so doing, I think Miyazaki and his colleagues point out the key to true happiness.  We have to be careful not to miss it!

  1. (1) I think all of Miyazali's animation films are affirming humanistic values, such as love, hope, respect for nature, and inner peace. These positive qualities appeal to our deep soul.
    (2) I like "Howl's Moving Castle" the best, not only because of the characterization of the young handsome wizard Howl but also for the self-searching process happening to Sophie, who finally learned to be faithful to her true self.
I really admire her, and I hope the same for myself. It's an important lesson for everyone!

  2. The characters in Miyazaki's animation movies are so cute and vivid; for me, it is the reason that I love his movies. Also, I think his movies reflect the reality, and there are some fantasies appealing the audience to discuss the metaphor behind it. As to me, “My Neighbor Totoro” is my favorite animation movie. First, Totoro is so cute. Second, Totoro is many Taiwanese people’s childhood star. Third, people around the world love to see this film so much, just because it is a warm film that is suitable for family.

  3. Take totoro as an example. That's really accompany me through my childhood. I would nver forget how crazy i was for this film when i was a little girl.
why I love this film? I think it's the creativity. can you imagine that cat can be that big, and take you to traval? Although its plot is simple, but you will never know what will happen next. As to why people around the world like Miyazaki's animation movies is also the creativity and funny characters. These movies always bring happy to people who watch them.

  4. I like every piece of his works, there's only one animation movie that I've never watched which is Porco Rosso. I enjoy every animation movies of his but I'm not a big fan of Miyazaki. I love the kind of animation movies like American cartoon. X-men, Batman, Hulk, Ironman, Watchmen.....I love these kind of super hero animation movies. If I have a chance to choose what I'm going to watch between the Miyazaki's animation and American super hero animation, I'll definitely pick the latter one. So, actually I don't know why Miyazaki is so popular around the globe.
I like Ponyo the most, because the main character Ponyo looks and acts pretty like my girlfriend, Cola.

  5. my favorite Miyazaki charactor is Totoro because it is part of my impressive memories in my childhood. i even made the Totoro stuffed animal by hands that time.
Think that movie express the naive but pure in minds so they can contact the fantasy world full of creativity and pure friendship with Totoro.

  6. i don't understand how Miyazaki's films can touch people's heart of all ages, but they just do, everytime.
the films capture the little things in people's childhood memories and enlarge them with unlimited imagination.
i love Ponyo the most. it reflects the spirit of mermaid, sacrificing magic power for human world, and brings up everyone's imagination of non-existing/exclusive friends in childhood.

  7. Actually, I love all his productions, especially My Neighbor Totoro and Whisper of the Heart. I think Miyazaki has a senstive heart and exiquite sensation. That's why he truely feels those touched moments, captures them and presents ih his animations.

I love Tsukishima Shizuku the most. She knows what she wants in the future and steps firmly toward her gaol. Besides, in order to keep up Seiji, she tries so hard. I especially remember what she says toward Shinji that she doesn't want to be the burden of Shinji; she will always back him up. I love this so much. I see Shizuku with courage and wisdom. I wish I can be like her.

  9. 1. Miyazaki’s animation presents the hope, world peace, and nature protection; these are the things nowadays’ people stress on. Miyazaki uses his animation to covey his core ideas, and covey them to their audience, reminding people of taking the action.
    2. My favorite animation is ”My neighbor Totoro”, since this is the first film when I contact Miyazaki’s animation, and it accompanies with my childhood. I think the reasons why Miyazaki’s animation can be supported by people are the beautiful music and hopeful story.

  10. When I watch the film produced by Miyazaki, I was always touched by the story line. The most impressive movie for me is “Totoro”. Its music attracts me very much. When I hear part of the music, I can tell you that it’s TOTORO’s song definitely without doubt. The story live with the music can attract people very much. I think the story falls into my deep heart. When I was a child, I almost have no friend to play with; by the way, my sisters were older than me by over 6 years old. The only thing I can play with is the TV. TOTORO gave me a sense of the imagination. I can image I have a friend, the big big big creature, to play with. That’s why it attracts me very much.

  11. I like Miyazaki's movie. My mom said that I watched Totoro repeatedly when I was so little, but i didn't remember. Now i still love these animation. It shows that warmth between people. And i can receive the emotion that Miyazaki wants to convey to us. It is moving but also inspiring. I especially like "Spirited Away" and I watch it for more than two times. The characters like the no face man, and two grandmas are so distinct. Miyazaki told us so many through the characters he produced.

  12. (1) Miyazaki’s animation movies always combine education with Japanese traditional notion, also using various and typical characters to exhibit his thoughts in his creations. People are attracted by the compact of style of his drawing and the rich content of the stories.
    (2) In Howl’s Moving Castle, Sophie uses her strength and knowledge to rescue Howl. This adaption attracts Taiwanese people to dig deeply to know the hidden meaning in the story, and we can learn something through seeing this animation movie, such as the notion of against wars. The animation movie also encourages us to chase after our dreams.

In Miyazaki’s animation movies, he always used a way of somehow like fiction movie to describe the story. In other words, something happened in the story won’t happen in our realities, such as “Howl’s Moving Castle” ; on the other hand, by using this way, through the story, he could also reveal some issuer which are worth discussing.
Well, I would like to say "My Neighbor Totoro" is the movie I would choose. Because I have watched it since I was very very young. Some cartoon or some animation movie watched in people childhood especially touch people’s mild. When you talked about them, they would remind your memory of childhood. As I said, the fiction way used in this movie would fit people’s imaginary world. It gives people another world to explore.

  14. Miyazaki's movies touched the inner part of our heart. That's the reason why his moveis are so popular. I like all of his moivies, especially "Kiki's delivery service". I watched this movie when I was in elementary school. I like the main character Kiki and her black cat very much. I think it's a very inspiring movie. 96540317 Jocelyn Chen

  15. When it comes to animation movies, most people would think that they are for children only. However, Miyazaki’s works appeal to people of all ages. Although some characters in his works are more cartoon-like, it is still very popular among adults. His works arouse people’s emotions successfully. Most of his animation movies focus on depicting the affection among all the characters. The special attributes of his works is the enlightenments after viewing. Among Miyazaki’s works, I prefer “Grave of the Fireflies” to the others. The story of “Grave of the Fireflies” is really touching. It makes old people think of the early years of their lives. There were a lot of tragedies caused by wars all over the world before. Although wars seldom happen now, we should not forget them. From this animation movie, the younger generations like us can know more about things at the wartime not only literally but also visually in order to remember the influences of wars.

  16. Personally, I think Miyazaki emphasize on human’ virtues, such as kindness and courage; also, Miyazaki usually arouse audience awareness on protecting our mother nature. In addition, friendship or sincere caring to others is the key elements in all his animations. He built up his ideal world with admiring characters and led us into his carefully designed fantasies.

“My neighbor Totoro” is an outstanding proof that Miyazaki wins his reputation unanimously. Only in Taiwan, when I mention Totoro, no one ever says that he or she doesn’t know about this animation. Moreover, I even placed Totoro as my Facebook profile picture, and even my mainlander friends came to discuss about Totoro’s plot. Particularly, in Totoro, Miyazaki cleverly conveys sisters’ complex relationship in a context which contains imagination to fancy, cute, kind creatures. All those appealing characters in combination contributes to Totoro’s success.

  17. I watched most of Miyazaki’s animation movies when I was a little girl. So, people might want to trace back to their childhood memories by means of watching his movies. Spirited Away is a movie illustrates humans greedy, while the main character uses his pure mind to help people. The incident makes her learn a lesson and cherish her life afterwards. This movie is related to our profit driven society. People often neglect to examine what themselves really want in their lives.

  18. Every Miyazaki’s animation has its own meaning. I think Miyazaki wants to describe human nature, relationship between parents and children, friendship and even love to the audience. Audience can learn something from the movie in a very relaxing way. Furthermore, I think Miyazaki’s animation is very educational. Although the animation doesn’t teach audience what they should do. They make audience think what they can do.

I believe that majority of people know what Totoro is. This animtion is my childhood memory. I was never tired of watching Totoro when I was a child. Even though I am an adult now, I still like Totoro very much. I am crazy about it, and I watch it for thousands times. I can sing the theme song. Also, I memorize the characters’ lines. The characters in this animation are really cute. Especially, I like Totoro the most. He is very helpful. He helps the siblings a lot in the animation. He is a super hero but being shown in a very cute way. In addition, I like the cat bus very much. If there was one, I want to take it. It seems that the seat is very soft and comfortable. It can bring me to whenever I want in a very high speed. It can fly in the sky, run on the wire poles. Takeing cat bus, people don’t have to worry about traffic jam.
I think Totoro satisfies audience’s imagination. Also, it satisfies children’s dream which is having a super hero who can help them at anytime.

  19. Well, I think the reason why Miyazaki has won people's hearts around the globe is that his pieces can always touch people, and they are so authentic. Every piece of his production reflects the genuine self of the individual. I think that Miyazaki is quite a sentimental man and owns a strong sense of sincerity; he has such creativity to produce loads of fantastic works to attract people around the world.
Actually, I’ve only watched three works of his which are Totoro, KiKi’s Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle. Above all, Totoro is said to be the representative and pronoun of Miyazaki’s animations. Honestly, I adore his early works, which I consider more down-to-earth. The characters Miyazaki designed are so beautiful and each has its own charm. These qualities make Miyazaki a successful animator.

  20. Each work created Miyazaki always has some commonalities. For example, all of his works contain elements like love, peace, or green issue, and these elements are the universal issue that people from all over the world need to deal with. Therefore, it is this universality that makes Miyazaki's animation so popular worldwide. Also, his splendid hand drawing skill is another major reasons that can attract people from all age to love and appreciate his works.
For me, i love Howl's Moving Castle among them all. Although i never get the chance to finish the whole movie, i still love it very much! I like this animation for its beautiful hand drawing, the look of the main characters, but best of all, the story itself. In this animation, it Howl and Sophie, like every other human beings, have their own flaws. Through the love between the two, they started to built up a close relationship, and they help each other to go through their touch task--the self-discovering and self--transforming--so, at the end, both of them become a better person than they used to be. This animation inspire me a lot and also give me a chance to face myself and examine my own weaknesses. Everybody are normal in the sense of we all have our own flaws. But, if we understand our weak points and try to improve them; then, we will all become a better person. This is what i learned from this animation and this is also why i love it so much!

  21. Miyazaki has the magic touch with his animated movies and he makes connection between all of his works. His movies are very moving. I like Nausicaa a lot because it was very special when I watch it for the first time with one of my friend. Now, all films show the dark and sad side of life but Miyazaki is very different he shows us everything good in the world. They are very inspirational to me and to people of all ages because he show that weak can become strong, good can triumph over bad and love can heal all wounds. When People see his movies can see everything peaceful and beautiful.

  22. (1) I think all the Miyazaki’s animation contains important moral values, and audience can easily learn it from viewing those animations. Especially, I also think people are interested in Japanese’s traditional culture which implied in Miyazaki’s animation. When I was a child, I loved Miyazaki’s animation so much not only because of its characters were cute and vivid but also its special moral value. I think the value is very useful in my life time.
    (2) I think I love “My Neighbor Totoro” mostly because I often saw this film with my family when I was a little boy. The magical Totoro and Cat bus were really made me crazy at that time. I remembered I even recited the theme song of Totoro. The Totoro’s story plot is suitable for all ages to view and the meaning beyond the story plot is also important. I especially love this part because I think people can’t give up any hope and they should seize their opportunities tightly.

  23. (1) Those characters in Miyazaki's animation movies are based in our real personalities in daily life. When you watch some parts, you will feel familiar with the situation. Although there is still difference between reality and anomated cartoon, Miyazaki knows how to combine these into movies. So, he can success in attracting people in all ages.

    (2) I love Miyazaki's animated cartoons, especially "My Neighbor Totoro". I haven't watched this cartoon for a long time. But I remembered that I loved it when I was young. Miyazaki created Totoro is based on the animal called "chinchilla". Chinchilla is a symbol of love and dream. I think that's the main point that Miyazaki wanted to express to people. After watching this cartoon, people will be attracted to it.

  26. I think the reasons why Miyazaki's animation movies are always loved among children and adults are its magic and touching plots, cute figures, and the music.
The interesting plots make people relax when watching Miyazaki’s animation movies. Also, those stories are proper for children to watch such as My Neighbor Totoro, and so on. My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite Miyazaki’s animation movie. This story is touching and magic. The image of Totoro is the successful figure in this movie. My neighbor Totoro is like a metaphor of the relationship between two little girls and a Totoro. Besides, I think the music is the factor contributing the popularity among Taiwanese and people around the world. The brisk melodies make people easily follow to sign. Also, the lyrics are touching.

  28. "Spirited Away" is my favorite one in Miyazaki’s movies because of its storyline. I remember the last part of the movie, the main character, 小千, helps her boyfriend recall his name and break the witchcraft. This part is very touching, and this is the reason why Miyazaki always attracts audiences into his world over and over again. In his movies, we can see the endless hope and great imagination which touch people’s heart deeply. 31. (1) Speaking of the special attribute of Miyazaki’s animation, I really admire him for making animations which is no longer for child only. It is suitable for all ages. I think the special attributes fall into three categories: awareness of natural environment, appealing to all walks of people and advocating the peace.

(2)Honestly, in the characters of Miyazaki’s animations, I really admire the characters in the Castle in the Sky, especially Pazu, the main character in this animation. I think simply by this name, Castle in the Sky, Miyazaki successfully touched people is fascinated with the sky, and realized people’s dream of ultimate freedom. To recall my childhood’s memory, I still remember when exciting I was when my aunt bought my brothers and me a story book of Castle in the Sky, because I heard lots of my friends talking about this great and dream-like animation. In all of Miyazaki’s animaitons, I love the Castle in the Sky most.

  32. The special attributes of Miyazaki’s animation movies are found just like our presentation had talked about. In Miyazaki’s animation movies, he always focused on one main theme that brought about one issue either crucial to our society or reflected our mind and heart—green issue, the family or love relationship, or the female roles. Some of his movie gave us unlimited imagination such as in “Spirited Away,” humans were changed into animals, and there were gods, witches, and monsters appeared in this movie. All of these things were issues pertaining to the concern of all ages so that they receive such universal appeal and appreciation. What is more, they are perfected by Miyazaki’s insistence of drawing the pictures by himself.
Among all the animation movies created by Hayao Miyazaki, I like Spirited Away the best. In this movie, the green issue, as always, was talked about. And there was also the importance of finding and being yourself being emphasized. It told us not to changed yourself to cater to the world, or be seduced by the enticing wealth, the glory, and fame in the world, but be true to yourself. This is so much full of educational significance that people, especially in the current society, should know. At the same time when we tried to pursue them, there seemed to be something else that we had long forgot or lost, for example, ourselves, our relationship with others, or our health. By paralleling the two poles of the right and wrong, the justice and injustice, Miyazaki tried to tell us that what allures before our eyes may only be illusion or even the mirage. We should always know what we want and what we need, rather than simply go with the tide. That’s the meaning of life!

  35. 1. Miyazaki's animation movies are excellent with works of art that are inspiring, wise, and beautiful to look at. Most of his movies are infused with the appreciation sense for the environment. In most of his films he has a message that humans affect the environment, and that we must do something to save our planet. His films are also famous for their main characters: his movies mark powerful female figures, whose talent and strong will overcome any obstacles they encounter. Through the fantastic animation and themes of his movies, his works gain mass crossover appeal and attract people in all ages.

    2. I like “Princess Mononoke” because as in most Miyazaki’s films, Princess Mononoke’s main character is a powerful, wise, compassionate heroine who acknowledges the environmental significance of nature, and sees beyond petty wars to the only viable future for earth.

  36. (1) I like Miyazaki’s animation. I think the special attribute of Miyazaki’s animation movies is that, in every Miyazaki’s animation, there will be one or more than one imaginary character. It doesn’t exist in the reality. It makes people feel interested. In his movies, there will be some implied issues, which are very meaningful and educational. This makes parents think those movies are worthy of watching. And that’s why his movies appeal to all-aged audience.
    (2) Among all the animated movies produced by Miyazaki, I like My Neighbor Totoro the most. I think it is part of my childhood memory. I am looking forward to the Japanese-style old house, with a small forest by its side. I wish I could have a ride on the Cat Bus. For Taiwanese, I think everyone must have watched at least one animated movie by Miyazaki. Even nowadays, they are still producing more and more new animations. As I mentioned in my response to the first question, parents watched Miyazaki’s animations in their childhood. They will introduce to their children. As for people around the world, I think it is the different interpretation of the original literature work. They might read the origin before. After they watch the animation by Miyazaki, they will have a new idea about the literature, like Howl’s Moving Castle.

  37. 1) In my opinion, the special trait of Miyazaki's animations is that, you wouldn't see any violence in the movies. Even though the characters would face some difficulties, they would conquer it in the end. In other words, Miyazaki's animations give people a positive power. All of them encourge people not to give up and hang on until the last second.

    2) My favorite animation of Miyazaki's is "My Neighbor Totoro." The reason why I love this animation so much is because of the cute characters. The warm story of Totoro has been attracted many people from all over the world as well. Even though some of the researchers think Totoro is a monster, I think it's a fuzzy creature that protects you and always stands by your side.

  38. Miyazaki's animation is worldwide famous. I believe the reason is that he can always touches the deepest feeling in people's heart. like TOTORO, I watch this film in my third grade. in that time, I feel so amazing about the huge creature and the weird cat train, and I wonder if there are really these kinds of animal out there. After all these years, I still believe that I can meet them some day in my life.

TOTORO, one of the best movies that Miyazaki has made, touches all the children around the world. It fulfills their imagination to the world and life, and it also creates a fairy tale like world to the entire human. There is always love out there, as long as we willing to devote our life and search for it. I believe that's what Miyazaki wants to tell us.

  40. Miyazaki’s animation movies are always educational and inspiring. Affection between family members, friends, and lovers; the great impact of wars; courage; the awareness to the Earth, these above and etc are the materials of his animation series which appeal the audience of all ages because once again, they’re not just adorable, they’re educational and inspiring.
I still remember that my parents bought me lots of cartoon video tapes in my childhood, and Miyazaki’s animation movies were included. I once owned My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s delivery service, and Only Yesterday. Among all the works of Miyazaki, I love Kiki’s delivery service the most. When I was a kid, I thought a cat like Kiki’s who can talk is so cool; also, the brave of Kiki riding a brush to save the boy in accident when her magic power is weak is admiring to me.

I have to admit that Totoro is my favorite animation of Miyaza's works. When I was young,I almost bought everything that are related to this moive. I love Totoro, because it's amazingly cute! And I think the reason why Miyaza's movies are so popular is because he makes people think of their childhood. We all have our own special memories of being a child. When we watch his moives, they somehow bring us back to our childhood and those wonderful old times.

  42. 1) I think Miyazaki’s movies are all focus on one thing—make the world become a great place for people. What’s more, pure love is the only way to achieve the goal. Loving family, friends, strangers, and the world is the main theme in Miyazaki’s movies. Miyazaki’s movies seem to give people who live in complex society a hope to get pure love.

    2) I think the reason why My neighbor Totoro is so popular among people in Taiwan and around the world is that the movie give us a innocent feeling. Nowadays, it’s hard for us to live in an innocent environment. People don’t need to worry about anything but feel the happiness among the sisters during watching the movie.

  43. It can say that I grew up with Miyazaki’s animation movies. My childhood can’t be completed without them. I always wonder why his animation movies can always make me smile, cry, excited and touched. I think it is because both of Miyazaki’s characters and stories can helps his audiences think of the innocent time such as childhood and brings them back, no matter how old they are now. The purest times we have. Therefore, we can be moved so easily. I can’t point out only a movie that I like the most, because there are so many good movies. However, the most impressive one is “Grave of the Fireflies.” I cry every time when I see it.

  44. The magical world in Miyazaki’s animation movies helped to attract global audiences. What we see in his movies can not be seen in real world. The fantasies in his film are so appealing. They also give people the opportunities to imagine. The true and innocent qualities of the characters are one of the reasons that people love Miyazaki’s animation movies.

“My Neighbor Totoro” is one of the films that many people have watched when they were little. It lies in a lot of people’s childhood memory. The cute Totoro and the characters make the film so attracting. Many people must want to meet such a cute creature in real life. And people may want to take the furry cat bus as well.

  46. Almost all Miyazaki’s animations portrait or even emphasize on the innocent aspect in human, either children or grownups. The “cuteness” is well accepted in Miyazaki’s work as they remind the soft and warm memories in the audience. Personally, I consider My neighbor Totoro as a timeless masterpiece. It has everything that makes a big hit: interesting plot, strong figures, and catchy theme songs that remind people of Totoro’s image whenever they hear it. The adventures of the little girls are like the journeys we had all been through in our lives and Miyazaki put it in a very creative and lively way that arouse everyone’s sympathy.

"My Neighbor Totoro" is one of my favorite animation movies. I think the reason why Taiwanese and people around the world love this movie is that the movie makes us think up the beautiful nature and the love between families. Actually, my mother loves this animation movie, too. We have watched this movie more than three times and I am happy that every time we watch this movie, she laughs and looks like a child.

  48. In Miyazaki’s animation movies, we can always see love, hope, friendshop..etc. He even focuses on protecting enviroment. Though many years passed since he has engaged in animation movies, he never goes with the current, he persists in his principles. His animation is still touching and closely related to our life. Take one of my favorite animation movies, Whisper of the Heart, for example, it depicts vividly the struggle that all of us may confront, which I have the same responses to.

  49. The animation movie I choose is Ponyo. Similar with My neighbor Totoro, the movie focuses on the simple stuffs. There is no craftiness. Its story line is simple. Sōsuke’s mother is faithful toward his father. Although he is a sailor, she stays on the island waiting for the day when he comes back. And the interaction between Sōsuke, his mother, and those grandmothers are also simple.I think everyone likes the simple stuffs. People like stable life, with some excitements inside. Living in a life with high tense may drive people crazy. That is the reason why Taiwanese people and people around the world love to see Miyazaki’s films so much. Nowadays, our society is too complex. Every day we are fighting for survival. We are competing with each other. People are fighting for their benefits. But when we watch Miyazaki’s films, it seems that we go to anther world. We become children again. That is a wonderful place because everyone is happy there. That is the dream that we want.

  51. The main attribute of Miyazaki's animation movies is that they are not just animations but thought-provoking stories. That's why they attract people in all ages and all walks of society.
The animation, "Grave of the Fireflies," is the most impressive one. It's a story in wartime. It tells people how horrible a war is, the dark side of human characters, and humans' helplessness. The most important is to cherish what we have had in hand.

  53. My favorite animation of Miyazaki is “Kiki’s Special Delivery Service”. I think its popularity between Taiwanese and people around the world is attributed to its plot. Most of us share the very similar challenges and experiences like Kiki. That’s why people all enjoy watching Kiki’s psychological development from immaturity to maturity.
