Did Romeo and Juliet have a chance to live a happy life together?
In the fair town of Verona, there were two rival families, the Capulets and the Montagues They tried their best to use every method to destroy each other.
Romeo was the only son of the Montague family and Juliet, the only daughter of the Capulet family. The two met and fell in love with each other. Against the background of hatred and violence, they made the arrangement with the priest and got married secretly in the church.
Unfortunately, Romeo killed Juliet's cousin against his own will to avenge his best friend's death and was banished by the city authority as a result.
During Romeo's absence, Juliet worked out a plan with the priest to avoid the arranged marriage with another man. She drank the potion given by the priest and faked death. It was the plan that when Juliet awoke from her sleep, Romeo would return to the city and took her away secretly.
Unfortunately, the message from the priest never reached Romeo. Instead. Romeo was informed by one of his friends of Juliet's death. Romeo returned to Verona and saw Juliet's body lying motionless. With deep sorrows, he drank the poison he had brought with him and committed suicide.
Shortly, Juliet awoke from her fake death and saw her Romeo losing breath with her own eyes.
With great shock and grief, Juliet killed herself with Romeo's dagger and died next to her love.
Their determination to die together rather than being alive apart awoke their parents from their deep hatred against one another. A hope for reconciliation emerged at the cost of the lives of this young couple.
For several hundreds of years, their determination to keep the sacred promise in love and in marrige have touched upon the hearts of many lovers, young and old.
It is said that this is one of the best tragedies William Shakespeare has ever written.
Discussion topic:
Was there any possibility for Romeo and Juliet to beat the odds and live a life together?
Maybe there would be a chance if Juliet's cousin could give up the hatred first. Since Romeo released the friendship first, the hatred should have been possible to be wiped out. How enormous is the hatred that makes such a tragedy? Juliet's family were blind with hatred, ruining the chance for the two families to make up.

How sad this story is! They're foes to each other; however, they just happened to fall in love with each other. I think that it's unnecessary for either of them to sustain the hatred for generations. Yes, they could have owned their own happiness since they love each other so unconditionally. yeah, it's true that if Tybalt could have given in as soon as Romeo retreated at the very spot. Because of the feud, two families had left behind the shadow for Romeo and Juliet and even themselves; the two families would live in regret for the rest of their lives.

After seeing this film again, I realized something that I couldn't feel before: Their sudden yet sincere love for each other and their strong desire to be united in sacred marriage are so striking and so rare. I am speaking from the perspective of a middle-aged woman. Love with such an intensity that death does not mean a thing at all is not likely to happen i older age. Love with such purity that family ties no longer entrapped the hearts is not likely to exist when people get "matured." Such love is most likely to happen when the lovers' hearts are young and pure.
ReplyDeleteIn this youthful age, the unity between Cupid and Psyche is possible. Oh! My God! Have you all ever fallen in love in your teens? It may sound foolish, but I can feel the strengths in the lines written by William Shakespeare in this play. He is really a good writer. He has captured the true feelings of love. In this sense, he is still very much alive today. Wow! What am I talking about now? Let's go back to the question!
I don't think there is a chance for them to stay alive, and it is impossible for them to be together when they are alive. The barriers are simply impossible to cross. As I discussed with my son last night, they could only be together during death. Yes, they can be together forever--in death. It is sad yet unforgetable. That is why this is the most beautiful tragedy Shakespeare has written. As humans, we lose with compensation and we gain with sacrifice. This is the paradox of life. Of course, there are times when everything goes well and we are lucky to have everything we desire. However, this does not happen here.
Anyway, wait till next week when we get to Shakespeare in Love. It is an eye-opener too.

After I finished the movie, the first feeling appeared in my mind was a pity. What a pity between Romeo and Juliet about their love emotions. Actually, I thought that there are some chances Romeo and Juliet could change the spite between their families. At the beginning of the movie, I wondered about why Romeo didn’t go to Juliet’s house and asked her father to solve their clan’s problem. Just say out loud and be polite. I didn’t think it was a hard thing to do. However, Romeo didn’t do that and he continued to contact with Juliet stealthily. All of a sudden, Juliet was appointed to marry with a rich guy who she didn’t love. At this time, why Romeo didn’t appear and said that Juliet was his wife? Finally, why Romeo was so careless that he didn’t check the mailbox, instead he just wanted to die with Juliet? Honestly, I preferred discovering and checking things by myself. Although the situation was so urgent, I thought he still needed to be careful.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, I thought chances were there. However, Romeo and Juliet were an unfortunate couple that destiny fooled them around. And, they lacked of bravery so that they missed those chances to live a happy life together. How sad the ending was.
Comment by Frank 96540314
In the begining, seeing Romeo changed his mind as soon as he met Juliet at the party, I began to wonder if there is love between them. How can Romeo dreamt about Rosaline for a time, but fell in love with the other girl just for the first sight? In terms of their marriage, they decided to get married after the party. They didn't know each other well at all at that time, and they didn't figure out a way to overcome the the conflict between their family. Their love couldn't deal with this disputed situation. Hence, their love story might be perfect with this sad ending.

To Frank, You are really a careful and courageous man. Not many people dare to walk into his/her enemy's house to declare his/her love for the enemy's child. However, just as you said, maybe it will work. I doubt that in the case of Romeo and Juliet there is a chance for their parents to reconcile and become the in-laws. The hatred is so deep~~
ReplyDeleteTo Julia, They are teenagers who dream of falling in love and finding their mates with such a zest. Juliet accepted Romeo immediately after he conveyed his liking for her. It's love at the first sight. Do you have this experience: to fally in love with sb at the first sight! (Oh! I did.) I think it's true and it's possible. Of course, as one gets older, he/she will "think" rather than "feel." Both Romeo and Juliet had anticipated love and marriage, so when they were sure of each other's feelings they got married and had sex. All seemed natural for them.
~~Vinia
This is a real sad tragedy, especially when the moment that Juliet fond out Romeo has drank the poison, it's hard for both of them to endure this unbearable moment,Did Romeo and Juliet have a chance to live a happy life together? I'll say it's very difficult, because their love is based on their first sight, sometimes this kind of love doesn't last very long. And another reason is that Romeo has mudered a man to get even with, it's even harder to live a normal life with juliet, due to all the reason above, my opinion would be probably a no, it's quiet impossible for them to be with each other like a normal couple.

I don’t think they have a chance to get together if they were still alive. If there were not Juliet’s cousin, there might be some one else to stop them from together. The family hatred between two families is so deeply rooted. In the movie, when Romeo and Juliet’s cousin were fighting, Romeo didn’t fight back; he just wanted to show his friendliness to him. However, Juliet’s cousin kept hitting Romeo despite of what Romeo said. I think the true meaning of forgiveness is not just only one of them gave up his hatred; both of them have to do so. Romeo can leave the family hatred behind, but Juliet’s families cannot. That’s no use too. Hence, maybe the end of the movie is not a sad ending. Although they cannot get together when still alive, they can get together after they pass away. I think it could be considered to be a happy ending, too.
ReplyDelete96540345 Angela, Hu
I don't think they have the chance to get together even if they didn't take the drugs. The biggest reason I think is from the others including Juliet's parents. The enmity won't reconcile until there are something which give them a shock. Just like Romeo and Juliet's tragedy, it is really a big shock for them. But everything is too late to understand anything at last.

I totally agree with Vinia's viewpoint that I think this kind of passion for love would olny appear when we were young and pure. For me, I will never ever accept myself committing suicide under this kind of circumstance because I think my life is way too percious. In addition, I think this kind of string desire for someone will not happen to me either. I am a very practical person who has always being too calm and rational when it comes to love issues. So I was totally shocked when i saw them got married in the film, this is just too irrational and impulsive! However, i won't say that they shouldn't get married or be together since I do believe falling in love at the first sight, but I still doubt that what would happen even if they won the approval by both of their family members. Based on the story plots, I don't think they are truly suitable for each other, also I don't think their love for each other can sustain forever since they don't even know how can they do to be together or what should they do to truly win everyone's blessing; instead, they only do things on the dark side covertly. All they had were temporary crazy passion for love without thoughtful consideration. However, honestly, i still think they have chance to live a happy live together only if they try really hard and start to do things with considerations. All in all, it goes back to the famous saying- think before you leap!!

Romeo and Juliet as well as the story- Liang Shan-Bo and Zhu Ying-Tai,ends with tragedy. It's really bad to see them sacrifice in the end. However, this may be another way for them to live happily in the other world. They are free from the hatred between the two families;they are also free from this burden world with mortals. I appreciate their courage and strong faith to sacrifice for each other;meanwhile, I feel sorry for them not to conquer this obstacle together, alive.
ReplyDeleteDuring the movie, Romeo and Juliet meet in the swimming pool, balcony..secretly so many times. However, the result might be different if they could restrain their passion a little bit, spent some time discussing their plan and future. Besides, I agree with Frank's opinion. If they confess to their parents firmly and sincerely, even the hatred between two families wouldn't disappear immediately, at least their parents would face this problem seriously. My father used to remind me that the "motivation" is important. If the motivation of their love is pure and simple instead of evil(ex: to harm each other or even their family), then no difficulties can't be solved.
Dying can not solve everything. And..chances are everywhere. If only they could be more reasonable;if only Romeo can wait another five more minutes before drinking the poison....

Actually I think Romeo was impulsive to commit a suicide by drinking poison when seeing "Juliet's body." (If I were Romeo, I definitely would turn over in my grave!)
ReplyDeleteStill, I don't think that Romeo and Juliet will have a happy life ever after when they are alive. Because marriage is not only about two people but also their original families. Unfortunately, their families are implacable foes. People always don't know to cheirsh what they've held in their hands until they lost all of them. But it's always too late!
To Ann and Frank,
ReplyDeleteYou two have positive thinking about Romeo and Juliet's chances of staying together eventualy. I will learn from you: (1) to be brave and to use brain to negociate, (2) to cool down a bit and to plan well for the dream to come true.

TO Eva,
ReplyDeleteIt's good to know that in cases like Romeo and Juliet, you would cherish your own life. I think the problem in the story is that neither Romeo nor Juliet thought about the parents who loved them dearly--although the parent-child relationship in either character was not satisfactory, as in many cases concerning teenagers.

ReplyDeleteNo, I don’t think Romeo and Juliet could have a chance to live a happy life together. I have two reasons; first one, they grew up in totally different families which hated each other; second, they didn’t know each other well.
ReplyDeleteEven though we can’t say that two people come from different families definitely can’t have a happy marriage, I think it’s harder for Romeo and Juliet to have a happy marriage than other people. Their families hate each other! If they didn’t die, they would have to deal with lots of problem between their families; I am afraid that those problems would kill the beautiful love and feeling they had at the beginning of encountering.
Romeo and Juliet fell in love after seeing each other; they kissed and missed each other crazily. Unfortunately, they were forced to leave each other after soon; the time they met again was the time they were about to die. They actually didn’t have enough time to communicate and know each other; knowing each other is the most important thing between lovebirds.
Because they died too soon to know each other well and solve the serious problems between their families, I don’t think they had a chance to live a happy life together.
96540328 Erita
I don’t think they can change their fate. Since the animosity between these two families is so tough that does need a big break to solve. From the movie, when Juliet’s cousin wants to provoke Romeo, Romeo tries hard to convince him it’s not proper to get fight. However, words can’t make Juliet’s cousin eliminate his anger, in the end, they fight, and Romeo kills Juliet’s cousin. From here, we can know that both families like to trigger the fight with each other. They take it as a habit to do this, so solving the animosity is hard for them, and both of them don’t want give way. In this situation, it of course leads this love story to become a tragedy.

I think it is possible that Romeo and Juliet can have a happy life together. After Romeo is banished at the night when he killed Tybalt, he should go to Mantua with Juliet immediately. However, he doesn’t. Instead, he goes to Juliet’s house and makes love with her. Tomorrow morning, he does not take Juliet with him. He just leaves. I think it is strange. He should know that once he goes to Mantua, it is almost impossible for them to be together again; especially Capulet wants Juliet to marry Paris. Then, we know that Juliet refuses to marry Paris, and she is grounded by Capulet. Now, she can just go to Mantua to find Romeo. (I think no one can stop someone, if he or she really wants to do something) But she does not. Instead, she goes to Friar Laurence for help. And for Friar Laurence, after he knows that Romeo does not get the letter, I think all he has to do is stay in the church, waiting for Romeo. According to Romeo’s personality, he must rushes to the church as soon as he can if he knows that Juliet is dead. All the things I talked above are just in the condition that if I can change the plot. But I think we should think carefully about whether they will have a happy life together even if they are alive. The only place they can live is Mantua. It is a new place. It is a place where they do not have any foundation. What’s more, I don’t think Romeo can hold a family. Although they love each other deeply, love can not take as a food to eat. They need money to live their life. And there is one thing that I think it is important. They are so young. They love each other at the first sight. They do no have the chance to get along with each other. We do not know whether they can fit to each other. Marriage is a very long thing. I think all they have is just passion. What if the passion is gone?
ReplyDeleteSorry to forget to type my number and name. It is by Mark 96540332
ReplyDeleteYes, I think they have the chance to live a happy life together, but that must be hard and painful. Because I think that though they loved each other deeply, their marriage wouldn’t get their families’ support. What’s more, Romeo had to be an exile forever since he had murdered Juliet’s cousin. They would live an unstable and fugitive life. Unless the two families agree to forgive and forget and be friendly to each other, Romeo and Juliet are possible to have a happy life together.
ReplyDeleteComment by Betty 96540315
As far as I am concerned, “Nothing is impossible.” In other words, anything could be possible. Of course, they might do have chance to live a happy life together; unfortunately, the love between them was rooted in the hatred of two families. The process to eliminate the hatred of the two families might be difficult, but not impossible. In my opinion, Romeo and Juliet needed to prove their love and to convince their families instead of just trying to escaping away. There wouldn’t be a satiable outcome if people always want to escape the problems instead of facing them. Problems could only be solved only when you face them. In Romeo and Juliet’s case, they needed to take steps very carefully, and “think before you leap” was a very important principle for them to follow. It could take time for them to eliminate the hatred; however, as long as they could get through it, they could have a happy life together definitely.
ReplyDelete96540313 Joy Chuang
I think they could live together by just runing away from their family, but not a happy life. Because the hatred between their family is too deep, even if they run away, the relationship between their parents won't improve. This is the thing which should be considered in our society. By running away, it seems you're escaping from responsibility. It's hard to simply leave your family behind and found a new family at your will.
ReplyDeleteHowever maybe as times goes by, both family might forgive this marriage as time can prove their love.
Actually i love the ending. It's not that i support the issue of suicide, but their death isn't that bad. The process of fighting and their death makes their love as beautiful and everlasting as ever. It not only marks an end to this hatred but also proves that their love can go beyond death.
by Anita
if they are not dead, i don't think there would be any chance for them to live happily ever after, simply because the barirers are too hard to cross and the anomosity between the Capulets and Montagues will apparently last for centuries IF they are not punished in this extreme way. it's not that i am down for this thought, you know, kill yourselve, but it's just a fiction after all, created by the greatest playwright Shakespear, and if this kind of situation DOES happen in our present society, i don't think anyone would say "awwww, that's so sweet", not only us, but also the news would be reporting the ugly sides of these people, whoever kill themselves ONLY TO BE TOGETHER. and that is the difference between reality and fiction.
ReplyDeleteComment by Michelle 96540451
I think they could have a happy life together if they weren't dead. I think they can live in a place where there aren't any acquaintances to bother and criticize their love if they weren't dead. Maybe they can enjoy a happiness life together in the heaven.
ReplyDelete95540450 Annie Chang
I have seen this movie on TV before. I think Romeo n Juliet cant live a happy life together forever because their families are so powerful and so hate each other, so they will definitely find out this couple no matter where they are, and separate them. Even they successfully escape; they will still be caught someday. So, I think they may live a happy life together for a period of time but definitely not forever.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think they could have a chance to live happily ever after. Romeo and Juliet were both too pure and loving to blame on others for their tragedy. Despite the conflicts and hatreds between two families, Romeo chose to LOVE Juliet’s cousin. Though Juliet’s cousin was killed, it was for taking revenge for the brotherhood and for the friendship, not for the forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet. Forced to endure the lost of a beloved cousin and the liberty to love, Juliet accused no one but fate. Such an unselfish and naïve couple could never live happily ever after by leaving the hatred and burden on others; Romeo and Juliet sacrificed their lives for peace, forgiveness and cherish.
ReplyDeleteI think if they weren't dead, they would have a chance to live a happy life together. And if they were alive; first, they can run away to the place that nobody knows them. Although they would be in a difficult situation, true love could overcome all difficulties. Second, if they won't cover their love, they could make a stand against their parents. I believe if they had a firm belief, then, they would bring reconciliation the hatred between their two families.
ReplyDeleteBy 96540347 Lisa
Well, I don't think they have a chance to live a happy life together. If they weren't dead, I don't think Juliet's parents would agree her dicision to marry Romeo. The biggest reason is the hatred between their families for generations.
ReplyDeleteI was curious about the fact that whether there was "love" between two of them. They fell in love with each other at the first sight. They enjoyed in their happiness but they didn't think what kinds of difficulties they would face in the future. Although they did think some difficulties they would face, it was still not easy for them to solve those problems. So, I think their love is a tragedy
Why not? I think this story is all about chance; then shouldn’t they have to get one chance and to live happily together?
ReplyDeleteIn this movie show us no matter how life is, love can be found anywhere with anyone. I think love is like sea if you don’t know how to swim, you will drown. They didn’t know how to swim, that is why they drowned by their own choice. It was because of the lack of thinking or just making tragedy ending to make us sad, they did chose an easy way for surviving their love. There were so many other ways to survive their love with. For example: Romeo could talk to Juliet’s family and ask for forgiveness. Juliet also could talk to her family and stand for her own rights and her life. However, they show us how they decide to survive their marriage and love.

Actually, I think they have CHANCES to live a happy life together. They Waste too much time on useless conversation. Although it makes their romance more beautiful, at the same time they miss chances to run away together. If they could leave the place they live originally and move to other places, they didn’t have to worry about there would be someone stop them getting together. They could enjoy the rest of their life together. Also, they could say countless beautiful words to each other whenever and wherever they want. Therefore, I think if they could plan how to run away first, they have many CHANCES to have a happy life together.

When I finished this movie, there was just one feeling which it was really a tragedy came to my mind. I am very sorry for their love. Nevertheless, I don’t think Romeo and Juliet could have a chance to live happy life together. At first, they fell in love with each other just when seeing at the first sight and everything happened so fast that they were even going to marry. They didn’t know and understand each other very well; moreover, their families are enemy. On the other hand, Romeo killed a man who is Juliet’s cousin. These things are the reasons that they could not have a happy life together.
ReplyDeleteGladys 96540323
It depends on the opportunities of selecting, there are too many choices to us to choose. Only if we went to a wrong astray, it would make the situation gone downhill and never be better again.
ReplyDeleteDo not act like a cornered dog, or it will leap over a wall. It might have the other ways to them, but Romeo and Juliet didn’t ponder deeply, and the Catholic father, who gave them such as this kind of miserable method, is a fully simpleton.
96540307 Millia
After watching this movie, I felt that there were many things that made Romeo and Juliet not be able to have a happy ending.
ReplyDeleteThe first is the plan. They could have gotten the chance to get together if they successfully followed the priest’s plan. The plan of the priest was good. But there were some flaws when it was put into practice. The first one was the mailman. If the man could ask others if they saw Romeo at the moment, he might find Romeo and give him the letter. But the mailman didn’t. The second one was Romeo’s friend. If he were not such a busybody, or if he could figure out the truth then rush to Romeo, Romeo would not be so furious and want to die with Juliet. The third is the priest. I don’t know why he didn’t stop Romeo’s friend after he saw him. If he could catch up with the boy and tell him the truth, he could let him to tell Romeo their plan.
The second part is Romeo and Juliet themselves. If Romeo were so brave, why not he just took Juliet away and fled together. At the moment, Juliet was forced to marry a rich man who she didn’t love at all. If Romeo could take her to other places and live together, though the live would be tough, Juliet would still be willing to sacrifice her luxurious life and run away with Romeo.
Also, I don’t think their families will be obstacles to their love. The world is so big. They can go to everywhere they want. Although this kind of live might be very tough, Romeo and Juliet can still conquer it if they really love each other.
96540306 Alan
At first, I think that they did have a chance to live a happy life together. However, after considering the whole situation, I changed my mind. The fate was the only reason of this tragedy. In the very beginning, I believe that love can conquer everything including the enmity between two family, and they can make their relationship public under the support of nurse and priest after going through a hard time. Nevertheless, thinking of the tough attitude of their family, I think Romeo and Juliet would only be grounded if their parents found out their relationship, and the end could still be a tragedy. Runaway is another way to start their new life. In the movie, they actually had many chances to run away, but they all missed it. If the priest had asked Juliet to meet Romeo immediately instead of asking her to pretend to die, or if Romeo had received the letter from preiest, or if Romeo did not drink the poison so fast! As the audience, how nervous I was everytime they missed the chance. I considered it as the unchangeable destiny, and the whole movie conveys a sense of powerless when people face the fate. Therefore, I did not think that they have the chance to live a happy life together.
ReplyDelete96540322 Jasmine
I think they did have a chance to live happily ever forever. I believe if they spend more time on repairing the relationship of their family, they could own a blessing wedding. Though building a close relationship is very important, it should be put to the very back.It would be quite worth after such an effort to restrat a new relationship with both their family.
ReplyDelete96540341 Ella
I think Romeo and Juliet would have a chance to get together if they trusted each other sincerely and made up their minds to convince their family members of their love. The end would be different. On the other hand, Romeo is too impulsive. He often did something suddenly. In the movies, if Romeo could stick to his faith and trust the pastor, he would reunite with Juliet one day.
ReplyDeleteIt is a truth that parents always love their children dearly. I believe that if Romeo and Juliet could spend more time understanding their family, their family might come to a compromise. Indeed, communication plays an important role. In addition, not Romeo and Juliet but also their parents are responsible for the tragedy. I think what parents did really affected their children much. If their family could abandon their prejudice against each other, Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t get married secretly. Also, they could live together happily forever.
96540326 Ronne
I don't think they have any chance to be togetehr.
ReplyDeleteThe happy ending from fairy tell will not happened in our daily life. Nowadays parents always want our husband/wife matches in socila status, so that we could have better life. But the situation in the moive is totally opposite. The tragedy happened since the first glance at the party. Their family were enemy, they just had zero percent to get together. The magic that preist gave them were not succeed. They missed the time, they died.
Finally, they both died, and our heart-rending. At the end of the movie. The police said that "they all punished." I think that's the best sentence to desibe what their families paid after they seen each other as enemy. 96540334 Paula
In my opinion, the answer is positive. There were several chances Juliet, Romeo, and people around them didn’t seize well. For instance, if Juliet’s mother could help Juliet to solve her marriage puzzle from a loving mother’s perspective, Juliet and Romeo would highly possible live happily ever after. With the help of a domineering mother, Juliet’s could grasp her love more easily. Unfortunately, Juliet’s mother was covered with her vanity so that she ignore her daughter was on the edge of the cliff. Perhaps arranging Juliet’s marriage benefits Juliet. While Juliet is in the extreme condition: she is one of those who would pay their lives for love. Truly money is the foundation of love, while without the passion of love for maintaining the relationship, the relationship ends with nothing.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, we are too busy to notice something glittering as well as fabulous in our daily life. If Romeo did see the letter on the ground or pay attention to Juliet’s tiny movements in front of her “grave”, their love would last long. However, our emotions always overwhelm our rationality. How could we avoid making false judgment? Probably, before we eagerly react to a phenomenon, ask ourselves and friends if we indeed need the reaction instantly. May us be sharp enough to see thing clearly so as to evade fault.
By Jennifer 96540333
I do not think they would have a chance to live a happy life together forever because in addition to the hatred history between their families, the act of killing of family members or friends of each side happened at the hands of Juliet‘s cousin and Romeo HIMSELF which makes the situation worse for Romeo and Juliet to stay together. Furthermore, even if Romeo and Juliet flee to another faraway place, I do not think that they will enjoy their life without their families’ love, besides, they will be more worried about their family’s security, and both Romeo and Juliet may not be able to forget about the killing thing because “Blood is thicker than water.” Moreover, I think Juliet’s family will get angrier if she goes away with a guy they hate the most, and for that reason there may be more fights happening between both of their families. Again, even if Romeo and Juliet accept the life in another faraway place, but eventually they will be caught and Romeo has to pay the penalty of his mistakes in spite of the fact that he killed Juliet’s cousin in revenge for his best friend.
ReplyDeleteBahyan 96540352
Love moves people. But love between Romeo and Juliet can’t reconcile the hate between their families. I think they can’t live together happily if the only way for them to achieve that is to flee away. In my opinion, people who can’t devote their love to their family first will never know how to love their life partner afterward. They had to consider more, not just affections in their spirits. Both of Romeo’s and Juliet’s parents must have already done numerous sacrifices to them so why can’t R&J just sacrifice their love to each other as a return to their parent. However, beautiful romance is always a tragedy, so it isn’t hard to recognize why Shakespeare wrote them a miserable ending. Happy ending is impossible to happen in unforgettable story.

ReplyDeleteI think they had a chance to live a happy life together. We, Taiwanese, like to say, “While thirty percent of your life is determined by destiny, seventy percent of it is created by your effort.” I believe that as long as they can work together, there are chances for them to solve the problem. Future is built by our own hands. And humans’ belief can be so strong that it can change the things which seem unchangeable. Moreover, the love between Romeo and Julie might be the turning point for the two clans to put an end to their hostility. So I think if they were willing to find out the key to cease the clans’ hatred, they might have a chance to live happily together.

I totally agree with Sharon's opinion; the classical wording makes the movie marvelous and beautiful, but when we watch it practically, we can easily think of suggestions to those characters in the film. However, I don't think they can live happily ever after even if they were alive. There are just too many obstacles to their future, and their love just seems to be a kind of infatuation to me. Just like what most classmates analysed, they do lack of plans and further consideration to solve problems. Death is not the best solution. If it's so easy, then no one would exist in this world because there are too many tough things happen in our daily lives.

In my opinion, I think they can live a happy life together if their social status are changed. If their families are not against each other, they would get a chance. I think, although this romance seems beautiful enough for us to see as a love story, but because there are too many ugly facts between the two families, hence making the story not so perfect. When I watched this movie, I just kept thinking that, the conflicts between the two families are totally unnecessary and wasting of time. The border between them should be vanished, then Romeo and Juliet can be together, and the most important is, the people who died because of fights can be saved. Lives are the most precious thing in this world. Once war is ended, love and life can be forever.

To Ivy~
ReplyDeleteYou have positive thinking as Frank does. You will try your best to make things happen.
To Jimmy~
You have a realistic stand in this matter. To realize the difficulties helps people make better plans to achieve their goals.
TO Annon~
Your conclusion is so sad. I think parents always want their children to be happy and don't usually consider their efforts to be "sacrifice."
If you really love the girl, please cherish her. You two will live a happy life and you can share the happiness with your parents. Please don't give up the girl just for parents' sake~~only when you can afford it and she agrees upon it.

ReplyDeleteYour idea is pretty crazy but practical~~to elope. This is how most clever lovers solve their problems. They could live in other places as a married couple and then went back home to ask for understanding and forgiveness from two sets of parents. In Taiwan, there will be a happy ending, especially when there is a new born baby to the family. However, I do not know what would Romeo's and Juliet's parents react to their elope.
To Alan,
You are indeed a very calm and clever man.
You see things with logic. William Shakespeare would love to have you as his parnter in writing a play.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I hope they could live a happy life together,it seems pretty difficult for them in the reality. Romeo and Julet do love each other, but sometimes it is not enough for a couple to only have the 'Love' between them.
They come from different family, and the most important thing is that, their families are each other's enemy, which makes things even worse.I feel sorry about them, because no matter how deep their love is,they can't make things work out after all.

ReplyDeleteOf course they can live in a happy life. I think all things can be solved if we really want to. Although the two family hate each other so much, Romeo and Julet's love can make this situation smoothly. The lvoe between them is so beautiful, and romatic. For their childrn good, the parents will give up their hatred, and live with peace.
I think they should not have a chane to live in a happy ending cuz this is a story about Romeo and Juliet. It suppose to be a tragedy, and that's why it's so touching and famous. If they have a chance to live happily forever, that's not so called "Romeo&Juliet". It is just a normal, boring love story.

There are chances for Romeo and Juliet to be together, but not possibly happy. Their love reminds me of Ceyx and Halcyone, which is rather strong and rare. Their love overcomes the twists and turns of life and sublimated into a higher level. Though the final solution, death, seems to be sad and extreme, I think it is the only and probably the best decision they can do in order to stay together. The chemistry and attraction between Romeo and Juliet are so immediate and extraordinary, that even if I believe love at first sight might happen in real life, the intensity of passion may not be able to compare with theirs. As a result, it requires different measures to deal with such intense affection. In this way, the heartbreaking ending may not be so regrettable since Romeo and Juliet can make each other more complete with their love in a non-human form.

yeah, I think they have a chance to live happily as long as Romeo wasn't so hurry to drink the poison, so they both will have a chance to survive. Although their family had been fought against each other for a long period, they could still run out of their family and live in somewhere else happily. Everyone should fight for their love and freedom.

I don’t think Romeo and Juliet will live a happy life together when they’re alive in that time. Unlike the contemporary period, the time in the movie seemed that children had to obey whatever their parents ask them to do, and they had no right to make their own decisions, not to mention their parents are rivalry. The hatred in the two families outweighed their love. Love conquers everything isn’t applicable in this play. Therefore, as long as Juliet is alive, she has to accept everything, good and bad alike, even to endure the arranged marriage. Only death can let the two get together. Therefore, maybe the best solution for them is like the ending goes.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, in addition to Ceyx and Halcyone that Mellisa had mentioned, Pyramus and Thisbe is the story that reminds me. Their story is also the forbidden love because of their parents’ rivalry. And it’s also the playing of fate that one of the party assume their lover had been dead and then committed suicide.
However, I think William Shakespeare had his reason for setting the plot like this. Sometimes we are trapped to choose between family and lover, and sometimes fate just determines our life, not that we made the choice, but we are destined to fall like this—the letter is destined to pass by Romeo, and Romeo was destined not to see Juliet awake even one minute behind…

I don't think there are any possibilities for them to beat the odds and live a life together. Just as other classmates'opinios, there are too many obstacles in front of them. I also don't think that faliing in love at first sight would be a lasting situation for them. Looking every thing at the practical side is not romantic, but sometimes it will protect us from hurting ourselves. And death can't solve anything. I don't think that the priest's plan for them is considerate enough. We should think twice before doing anything.

I think there is the possibility for Romeo and Juliet to live together. It’s hard, but I can see the hope. My way to solve this problem is that Romeo and Juliet should elope, and never come back again. If they just keep living with their family, the animosity would make them blind. Being part of their own family, they have reasons to hate each others; however, they didn’t and they fall in love at the first sight. They have the courage to love, why can’t they just keep away from their family members. I think it’s the best way for them to live a life together. To fight for love is the best thing that I totally agree with. 96540319 Emily
ReplyDeleteI think there are possibilities for Romeo and Juliet to live a life forever. Since Romeo and Juliet are the loveliest to both of the families, they can persuade their parents if they try their best. If not, they can ask for the preiest's help as well, but they have to find a more realiable mailman beforehand. In my opinion, people can conquer all the difficulties if they really want to. Roads are built by people, we have to fight for ourselves.

I think it’s possible for them to be together. They never have strong belief to break the hatred of two families. If they take a chance to speak out, they would make two families to think about it. Maybe, the country would change because the thought of love. The tie would loosen by them to think over the value of their life. The hatred between two families might disappear.

The world is big. It's possible for them to be together forever. Romeo and Juilet could just leave their country and back with their lovely baby. I'm sure their lovely baby could solve all the problem...moreover, time could solve everything.
ReplyDelete96540318 Sunny
I think it would be possible only by the means of thorough communication.
ReplyDeletethat was my comment,=.=
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think the answer to the question is yes. Although their families are family feuds, they can get away from their homes and escape to other places, which no one knows them, and start a new happy life. However, the premise is that they have to love each other enough. Then, the power of love can help them to conquer any problems.

Actually, I don't think Romeo and Juliet have the chance to get together because it is too hard to change their destiny. Their families hate one anothers so much. I still believe that it is impossible to change destiny in such a traditional society.
