(1) What are the marked traits in this TV series that have helped to attract you, a university student in Taipei, to this show?
(2) In addition to the description of interns struggling to become residents, this show is loaded with images of operation room, which are oftentimes bloody, and depictions of flirting and courting, which are sometimes explicit.  What do these two elements, i.e., blood and love, affect the audience?

An Overall Introduction of the TV series

A detailed introduction to this TV series can be found at

Grey's Anatomy is a popular Ameican medical drama television series.  The show has won two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.  It portrays the lives of five surginal interns, who later now became residents.  Their relationship with their mentors, which is very important in the field of medical studies, is also depicted. Since its premier on March 27, 2005 on ABC, this show has stayed the most watched prime time TV series and entered its sixth season, which starts on September 23, 2009.

The show's title derived from a medical textbook entitled Henry Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body. The change from "Gray" to "Grey" echos the surname of the heroine of the show, i.e., Meridith Grey. This linkage highlights the show's focus: A  medical doctor's life as a professional and as an ordinary female.

What's so special about this show in relation to multi-media popular culture is that each episode is characterized with its association with a popular song, which is used mainly in the beginning and the ending of the episode to reinforce the theme or moral of the storyline. In many cases, the episode is named after a song, and this provides more chances for the viewers to immerse into the storyline.

The characters in the show include people of different ethinicities. A color-mixing technique is adopted to create a racially diverse cast that includes African Americans, white people, and Asian Americans.

The first season introduces  five main characters who serve as interns in the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital in Washington State:

1. Meredith Grey
Her mother, Ellis Grey, was a famous surgeon and died as an Alzheimer patient. Her father left the family when she was five years old. He married another woman and had a daughter named Lexie, who becomes an intern later at the same hospital where Meredith serves as a resident. Meredith develps a sense of insecurity that deters her from a stable and steady relationship with her lovers, especially Derek, whose marriage proposal to her is turned down after he got a devorce  with his ex-wife Allison Shephard.)
2. Alex Karev
3. George O'Malley
He failed in the intern test and had to serve as an intern for the second year.In the beginning of the first season, he was attracted to Meredith.  Then he got married with another surgeon, and the marriage ended with  an affair with another of his colleagues, Izzie.
4. Izzie Stevens
She once posed for a magazine as a model to pay her way through medical school.
5. Christina Yang
She is a Korean American who devotes herself to her career. She was in a relationship with the residing surgeon, Dr. Burk, but got left alone at the alter.

Their mentors include:
1. Miranda Bailey ("Nazi")
She is an African American. She is a general surgeon who serves as the Chief Resident.
2. Richard Webber
He is an African American who serves as the Chief of Surgery of the surgical program. He once had a relationship with Meredith's mother when she was then working there.
3. Derek Shapherd ("Mr. McDreamy")
He is an attendng physician and develops love relationship with Meredith. After he divorced his wife, he would like to marry Meredith, but she was not ready.
4. Preston Burk
He is an African American.  He is the other attending physician and develops a relationship with Christina--only to desert her at the alter on their wedding day.  After the indcident, he resigned his job at the hospital and sent his mother to say good-bye to Christina.

  1. Grey's Anatomy is a really famous TV series around the world. I've heard it before. life in hospital is what I don't know, so I think that's why this series attract me. In Taiwan, a TV drama called 白色巨塔 is similar with Graey's Anatomy. The dark side, authority, power, machinations, benefit, and so on. I am really impressed by that drama. blood and love can describe as humanity. Even if they are interns who try hard to become resitants, they have other emotions which is like human, and can reflect the reality of this series.

  2. (1)Actually, this is the first the time I see Grey's Anatomy. I find it interesting but at the same time, a little bit terrible. The interesting part is that every charatcter has a vivid personality. When they get together working or chatting, some interesting and funny things will happen which attract my attention. But the terrible part is that it reveals the dark side of medical treatment in hospitals,ex,doctors makeing bet on surgery, or treat human life as if it were not worth a straw....It reflects what might really happen in our reality that I wonder whether I can trust doctors in hospitals next time.

(2)I don't like blood. Those bloody scenes are just terrible. So I admire those interns' and doctors' courage to execute surgerys for patients. Also, I am impressed by those interns' friendship. As I said, they have different personalities. But when they get together, they get along and corporate with each other well. For me,they are just like brothers and sisters help and encourage each otehrs. That is why it's amazing.

  3. (1) Since American series have been so popular here, there is one similar factor is that these series are involved with love. Each person in the series has his/her own personalities which are very unique from each other; as a result, each person has his own way to interact with people and dealt with things. It’s just like our life reflection; in our real lives, there are so many different things and people waiting for us to dealt with and face. This series attract me because it has taught me how to learn to be strong when we encounter difficulties. A thing has always has two aspects, and sometimes we need to look at the bright side instead of looking at the bad side.
    (2) Since they have been residents, they might have seen lots of people between death and lives; they might have gotten used to blood and death. They might be detached while they are doing the operation. However, there is something which melts their hearts and also empowers their sensitiveness to their lives again. That is “Love” -the love between patients and their family, and the love between those residents. The love did touch the audience and teach the audience that there is always choice to make by ourselves.

  4. Actually, I have watched Grey’s Anatomy for a long time, now I still keep watching its new episodes in season6. I love this TV series very much!
I think there three reasons why it is so popular:
    1. Professional medicine knowledge
Generally we don’t know much about professional medicine knowledge unless we major medicine. Grey’s Anatomy tells audience different diseases and how to treat them in different episodes. Also, by watching it, people can know how a hospital is run and what is a doctor’s life; it seems to unveil a different world that we seldom know.
    2. The relationship between people
There are different patients in different episodes, their relationship between their families, friends, and lovers often can let us think about ours. The beautiful love among families, friends, and lovers can easily touch people. People sometimes can see struggles or warms among patients or doctors.
    3. Love stories among charming characters
The gossips among doctors are talked with great relish, especially those doctors are all charming; those gossips are like a spicy in a cold busy doctor life. Doctors are not gods; they can be sad, angry, or happy like common people.

I think people like to see great doctors make splendid operations to save lives; the operations contain numerous medical knowledge and outstanding skills, which can vibrate people.
Love relationships among those characters attract audience by showing dramatic love. Characters often show the relationships in the elevator, which can impress audience; they kiss, blurt, communicate, or fight with others in it.

  5. (1) This is not my first time to see this TV series. The first episodes I saw is about the struggling on which patients to save. I was toughed by the final scene. I think it is the medical cases in every episode that arrracts me most. You would see many life philosophy through the interaction between patients and doctors including those interns.
(2)Those bloddy scenes directly give the audience a shot because we seldom have the chance to see inside the operation room. But people would not feel disgust at all because the love part dilute it. Love is a very crutial part inside the film.

  6. (1) I have aready seen the 7th episode of season 6. So, I know how complicated the relationship changes between those characters. "Grey's Anatomy" attracts me in so many ways. For example, as an intern, the competition is really competitive. They have to strike the balance in three ways. (1)work & love (2)love & friendship (3)work & friendship. No matter wich of them, they will face many kinds of difficulities. And that's why this TV series is so popular!

    (2) Blood and love seem that there is no connection between them, but not in Grey's Anatomy. Sometimes those characters have to go to the OR to save patients. What if the surgery is fail? If this situation happens, they will definitely need someone to company with him/her, especialy his/her lover. So, I think the connection between blood and love is important in the whole series.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Firstly, the twisted emotions due to interests, dreams, reality between extremely busy resident doctors in the hospital are appealing to us. The more complicated the connections are, the more interesting the episodes will be. Also, the mixed relationships as well as friendship shock me. I still remember that one male intern develops his forbid love to a charming resident. Moreover, the intern confessed that he loved her at the day they meet again in the hospital. It’s out of my expectation that doctors’ calm faces with superb intelligence would also be in delima like us when dealing with relationship.
Secondly, after watching Grey’s Anatomy, not only had I enjoyed the intricate emotions conveyed by those actors but acquired the medical knowledge. My grandfather used to be a physician, while he was no longer interested in telling his fabulous stories. Therefore I look forward to look up in Grey’s Anatomy to explore my grandfather’s life approximately 20 years ago. Probably I am able to ask a real physician about appendectomy sometime.
At last, astonishing medical concepts that make me understand how great the doctors are. They have to carry a huge amount of information to judge what actually the factors to our diseases are.
    (2)
Blood for me on one way represent dangerous, on the other hand shows stimulus to action movies. While courting is like blood, on one way risky; on the other hand, it is exciting: because we are eager to see if the courting works. Courting doesn’t necessary involve in blood; likewise, blood do not always come with courting. However, if we happen to see courting scene comes along with a hard fight with blood, our feelings will turbulently be stirred up.

  8. (1) In this TV series, the plot moves very fast. Though there is one core issue for every character, it doesn’t focus on one issue too long. I like this feeling. In one episode, it switches the main focus for many times. This represents the busy life we have in our real life. Also, in a hospital, people will reveal what they really feel and who they really are. Patients will reveal his or her true feelings to the family. The family will express true concern for the patient. In Taiwan and Japan, TV series concerned with hospitals are all great hits. The tension in the hospital makes me feel attentive to the plot, while those interns in the series seem not to be as nervous as I do. This is interesting to me.

    (2) Blood is rarely seen in TV series. There maybe a little but not so much bloody scenes like in Grey’s Anatomy. It’s unique and very impressive. It provides the audience basic ideas about how a surgery will be performed. Although some people may feel disgusting and uncomfortable when seeing blood, it’s the true situation in the hospital. About the love and those flirting and courting, I think that’s what the audience from all around world would feel the same and want the same.

  9. This is my first time to see this episodes. Beside the insteresting, I see the different characters between doctors. It's really very interesting to analyse different people's personalities. This episodes also tell me how to be a good doctor and what's the meaning bwtween this word─"doctor."

Blood─ this word means "danger" for me. It seems that it is not related to the word " love." But in this episodes, I see the connection between these two words. For example, when the black man's wife and children come to visit him and say the words to cheer him. It is very touch. Of course, this is the blood and the love.

  10. (1)There are two reasons why this TV series draw my attention. One is the high speed of the scene. The other is that I can know more about the doctors' life in the hospital from this TV series. The doctors and the interns have to do things really quickly to save lives. I like to watch exciting series just like this. And from the series, I learn a lot of medial words and have the chance to know more about how the surgery is done. Surgeons often have to work overtime because they don't know when the emergencies will take palce. They only have a little time to sleep and eat. Being a good doctor is really not easy. They have to devoted themselves to saving lives.
(2)After watching this TV series, I think that blood could be connected to love. From the OR, we could see that surgeons try hard to save lives. And we could always see that the patient's family members wating tensely out of the OR. It's because they love the patient and hope that their loved one could recover again. By 96540317 Jocelyn

I really like this TV series. It expresses real situations in hospitals. It makes me feel that I am in their world, too. It is very exciting and amazing. Every character has their own stories including those interns, patients and their families, and even residents. In such tense environments, people are easy to show what they really are. It is just like our real life in reality.
    (2)
Because there are both blood and love in this TV series, it becomes famous and popular. They are important elements in the series. It shows the audience real situations in operation rooms. Although they are bloody, they are exciting. The relationships between the characters are interesting parts. There are not only loves but also conflicts between them. So, I think that’s why it affects and appeals the audience so much.

  12. (2) I think Grey’s Anatomy draws college students’ attention easily. Hospital is a kind of mysterious place for most people. Everyone goes to hospital. However, no one knows the operation of a hospital. From this TV series, audience can know all the interns work hard in order to become residents. They have a really hard time when they are trained. They face difficulties. Also, they work under much pressure, which we cannot tolerate. The emergency will happen at any moment. It makes audience nervous. On the other hand, if the doctors or interns save people’s lives, audience will be really happy. Therefore, it is a very emotional movie which makes audience’s feeling change with the plots.

It will make the series more real to the audience. Reality is cruel. It is not like fairy tale. Everyone is happy; everywhere is peaceful. With these two elements, audience may get involved to the series more easily.
If the whole series are talking about emergency room, hospital or surgery, it will become boring. With other different elements, the series will become much more attractive. Also, with bloody scenes, audience will cherish their lives more. Besides, it may make audience stop thinking that doctor is an ideal job because of their salary. It is not a job which suits everyone. They do have hard time when they are trained. Moreover, they have to face many different and difficult emergency problems. Being a doctor is not as easy as we imagine.

  13. 1. i've watched this before, but i started out on season 4 so it's like cutting in right in the middle and it didnt attract me much, because i had troulbe relating whatever that had happened in the first few seasons to season 4. now since we've started all over from season1, ep.1, it all makes a little sense to me now. the marked trait that attracts me the most is that this series can always make me laugh and sometimes, make me cry my eyes out because it not only involves saving patients' lives but also the flirting inside this hospital, it has a variety of plots in it, and that's very amazing!

    2. i think whenever a film, tv series or whatever is involved with this LOVE element, it can always attract so many female audience, sometimes i think it's a bit cliche but girls just can't deny the fact, huh?! well, i didnt expect too much from the bloody scenes because it's gross but at the same time it shows audience what is really happening in the operation rooms or ER, basically the show includes not only reality but also fantasy, that's why it drew people's attention once it was released!

  14. Well, although the stories are about hospital, especially those interns and residents, it still concerns something with love subjects, and that is why it attracts many people, because with plots of Love, it always draws audience attention, simply just something cold in the hospital. This show combines cold and warm parts together, and that’s why it’s successful.
Well, I don’t think I like the bloody plots. I always turn my head to the side, shifting my eyes cuz I feel uneasy with those scary yet true scenes. However, I think that movies or TV series involved with Love can always attract the audience cuz without Love, life’s boring I guess.

  15. 1> After watching Grey's Anatomy, I've found out that being a surgeon is very amusing, you not only receive a good social status, you also can save numerous of people, and falling in love is the subject that attracts most of the audience I think, it intersperse the climax of these series.
It's hilarious, heart-touching, funny and sensational, what more can you ask for?

2> I could't help to look away when the bloody scence is infront of my sight, it's a bit gross and disturbing, but it always comes up with a good joke that takes me to another way of thinking, love and blood it's a very unique way of makeing a TV series, with two of these special elements, that how it got so popular!

  16. (1)This is the first time that i watch Grey’s Anatomy. Suprisingly, I found it very interesting and attracting! Actually, i am not "soap opera big fan" type of girl who follows the TV series season after season, except CSI, since I think they are basically all the same!
However, after I watched this TV series, I have different view on it. There are two reasons, according to my own feelings, that i think this TV series can attract people's attention and become its follower.

First, each episode has its own theme which usually related to the previous one or others. At the beginning of each episode, there will be a narration which can let people have some kind of clude about what will happen in this episode so that audience can have a better understanding of what's going on in the show.(since the tempo of this series is usually very fast that if once you lost, you will lost forever!) And by speaking of the tempo, i think i kind of like this fast speed of plot changing because i hate those drama that love to "拖戲"! By changing the plot very often, audience will be more focus on the story so it can catch audience attention even more!

Second, it is the combination of reality and fantacy. The hustle and bustle crazy life in the hospital reveal the reality of dotors and nurses' life , and their love stories mirror the beautiful dreams that ordinary people want or presue. Because it combine the real life and dreams, audience may feel close to this drama that they may want to know more about it, and further, dream that somthing similar might one day happen to them. So, this like life but not true life setting and story lines can sell not only the dreams but also the reality. So i think this is whu it can attract people's attention.

(2)Like what i just mention, love is always the very important issue when it comes to drama, and so as blood since these two can are the most common things that people feel touch by and resonate with. Anything that deal with love involve emontions such as angry, happiness, and etc... and it is also those emotions that can attract people and let the them get into the story, and then resonate and release their emotions as well. As to the blood, first, its backgroud setting is things happen in "Hospital" where is full of lives and death and, of couse, with a lot of blood scenes. And what can this blood brings to the audience is the weakness of huamn nature and the sense of emotions. It goes without saying that we all afraid of dying or watching our be loved one die, so this is our weakness and the place where easiest to be defeated by. So, whenever i see someone is dying or serious injured and the interaction between the patient and their family in the movie or TV drama i can't help but keep crying, and this is how they attract me and others. So, in short, love and blood are the tool TV programmers use to make their peak for their shows.

  17. We can't help ourselves but get deeply into many kinds of love. I never saw this TV series before, because I thought it might be boring. However,Grey's Anatomy is not boring at all. There are many interesting people in this story, and each of them has their own strugles, just like us. I think this is why this TV series attract people,we have connections with those roles in some ways. Though some of the plots are bloody,it doesn't make me feel uneasy. What I try to say is that we live in the life we live, sometimes life has pain and love at the same time. It is an art for us to deal with them.

  19. This is the first time I watch this Tv series. I think there are two reasons why it is so popular. First, hospital is the unknown place to us and therefore no one can expect what will happen next. Unlike the soap opera we watch everyday, there're always many hints to tell you what will happenand thus, I think this is the first reason why people love to follow each episode. Second is love stories. Love is the common element in movie, soap opera, drama, Tv series. From my experience, once I start watching it, I would like to know who end up with whom.

Firstly, we are students majoring in English, and that means of course we must know about the "popular culture" in the world, especially American culture. To me, the other attraction is that things happen in emergency room. Some are funny, and some are bloody and terrifying. Still, people can learn something from it, and by seeing one of the series, now I know that there are obsessives who can't control themselves to eat a miscellaneous collection of objects. It's really interesting.

    (2)
In each episode, audience can see humanity and love. Love includes complicated relationships with lovers, families, friends among those characters. Every character gets his own emotion weaknesses, and that's life and reality. To audience, blood represents vitality; on the contrary, it symbolizes separation of people from loved ones by death.

Compared with other TV series, Grey’s Anatomy has a very unique point, the story in the hospital. In other TV series, the scenes in the hospital only occur when someone is sick, dead, or pregnant. Most of the situation is bad. People do not like this place because it often carries tears and pains. However, different from others’ point of view, this series look at life from a different angle. Usually, we only feel and see the pain of the patient. From this series, we can understand the life of a doctor and the situation in the hospital. We can know that when someone is dead or not curable, it is not just the family of the patient feels sad. The inner world of the doctor is also fighting too. As we can see from the very first episode, the father of the beauty contest girl keeps scolding Derek Shapherd when he does not get an answer for her daughter’s comma. Of course, we can understand the father’s behavior. But, at the same time, we can also feel the doctor’s feeling of powerlessness. The difference is that we are looking at the incident from the both sides, not only aspect anymore.

    (2)
I think the two elements are connected. The image of operation room gives us the feeling of powerlessness. We are not omnipotent. Born, sick and die. It is natural. It is life. And somehow, it tells us the importance of your friends and lover(s). It is almost impossible that our parents can stay with us forever. One day, we will have our family. We will have our own life. But, it is not saying that we don’t have to care about our parents. Instead, it tells us that we should cherish our every second that we have with anyone because we never know that when will be the last time we meet each other.

  22. (1) This episode attracts me pretty much, because the vivid personalities of those characters attract me to see the episode, and I have never thought about the life in the hospital. By this episode, I have the chance to know the life in the hospital is busy, tight and tired; those doctors and interns have to face not only their work but also their own personal life. People in different field or career also have the same problems.

    (2) Most people never think about the life of those doctors in the hospital, because we know little about them; we only talk to doctors when we are sick. Tell the doctor our situation and then get the medicine to take. The director may want us to know more about their life. Though the life in hospital is busy and bloody, they still have the same problems like us. They also have to balance their love, friendships and work, and the only difference is that their life is filled with blood and crucial reality.

  23. (1) Well, TV series really attract me to watch. For instance, “Friends”, I have already seen several seasons. Although this is my first time to see the “Grey's Anatomy”, I can’t help but expect the following series. To me, the reason why TV series are so popular is
The stories talks about people and things around us
In Grey’s Anatomy, it shows people and things happened in hospital, but we as ordinary people hardly know them that are closely bound to our life. Also, sometimes it shows the public issues that are important but we always ignore. From those series, we can not only take the overviews of those people, but also remind us of taking care of those minorities.
    (2) It’s really bloody for me that I always close my eyes to ignore those scene. However, those plots are needed in “Grey's Anatomy” since it’s a movie about hospital. So, Audience will expect to see something happened in operation, and of course, those are bloody and explicit.

  24. 1) This drama is totally attractive, because it reveals situations of life by using "hospital background" as the media; for example death, life, family, love, friendship, career and so on. Therefore, the plot is at the same time dramatic but also close to our daily life. Furthermore, I like the beginning and the ending a lot. Each episode an issue is being "played", so we can learn things from different perspectives. For example at the previous episode where it mentioned "bonderies", the episode told us at the beginning that all people set their own bonderies and the reason why, and at the end, it taught us that bonderies kept us inside our world.

    2) The elements blood and love are things that make people "sick" when you look at it but also things very direct. And sometimes it's the shift of blood and love that let people stick with this drama. Blood draws a distance but love drags us closer to the plot.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The characters in the series, the interns, are new to working field. To look at ourselves, we are will be get into that position sooner or later. Hence, when I watch the film, I am usually consonant with their view on work experience and attitude of life.
The blood scene is sometimes hard to accept by the audiences, I think. But it makes the series more real and gives audience more powerful thought to the hospital or inters’ working situation. In the other way, I think the element of love is a spice to the series. Therefore, audience might think it interesting.

  26. To me, I think the relationship between doctors—the main doctors, the residents, and the interns—and the patients. Those patients need helps, and the doctors provide them with treatments. In this episode, the most impressive part is that a single mother who had a baby in her womb lost on e of her arms, but she really needs arms to hold her coming baby. Doctors tried hard to help her. I touched to die. The relationship between every doctor is complicated which make me want to watch it and figure out their relationship. When we see the blood, some of my classmates cried out and said disgusting; however, I don’t think so. It was part of someone’s body, and their family makes the decision to save life. We have love, and we‘re people. We have love for our family or friends. The situation we may encounter on day. In other words, we are part of the TV series. That’s why it affects us so much.

  27. We all think we are mature enough, and we all want do something big by using all we got. But sometimes, we fail; sometimes, we got it. We are not that good enough, we all need a platform for us to be failed. To fail is not shame, can't learn some from failure is shame. Why I like this TV series, because I am one of the characters.

  28. In fact, I think the TV series are writing in a very realistic way that I don't like it. Personally I don't like the scenes I saw in the hospital or in the emergency rooms. That will remind me of my bad memories when I was sent there last year. Therefore, I am not attracted by the series.

  29. it is just like a mini society in that hospital. the story reflects the uncertainness and unsecureness of "Freshmen" newly entering the working-field.
it's always a huge step forward to make use of what we had learned.
i guess blood and sex are just unresistable attractive to human kind!

  30. (1) I think the most attract me is that the part of doctors operate for patients. Why? It can make me to treasure my health better than before, and suffering from sickness is really painful. So, we need to take care of our health, surely.
    (2) Only a real thing can reflect a real love, I think Grey’s Anatomy can connect with the reality life of us. Every sudden affair is happened in everyday that we can defend. This movie can not only convey us to know that treasure our life, but also let us to start to enjoy love.

  32. (1) To me, this TV series let me know more about doctors' life. In fact, before watching this series, I think being doctors are good, because they earn much money but they don't have to work as hard as other people. After watching these episodes, I found that they are hard-working as well. They have to be well-prepared at any time. When facing patiences, they have to be calm and deal with all the problems as soon as possible. Therefore, I think this TV series changes my viewpoints toward doctors effectively.

    (2) In my opinion, the scenes are realistic. Even though the operating scenes are bloody and the flirting scenes are ironic, that truly happen in our daily life. Besides, I think the scenes arise the audiences' attention. maybe after watching the operating scenes, they will pay more attention to their health. On the other hand, our lives are fragile, the scenes also encourage us to cherish every moment and to love people who are surround us.

  33. (1) I think that is because the fast pace of the film and the complex relationship between these interns and residents that attract a university student like me addict to this show. Watching these interns struggling during their way to become residents is really addictive to me. They gained more knowledge and became more and more independent each time when facing with patient. I think it makes me good to watch people grow mentally. By watching these interns, we could also learn something that we won’t be taught.
    (2) Based on my own interpretation, the blood symbolizes cruelty. The lost of love ones, the competition of all interns and the love affair between interns and residents all of these things are cruel. Blood always make us afraid. Just like the intern, Meredith Grey, she is afraid of falling in love with Derek! In addition to these, we audience are easily attracted by something special, exciting and dangerous. Maybe the love affairs between residents and interns are just match with the audience’s appetite.

  34. Actually I am attracted by this TV series because of its song. Therefore, I want to know more about this TV series. Also, I am interested in how interns deal with their patients’ problem and how their feeling is toward their job. Being a doctor is a serious thing as doctors have responsibility to rescue those who don’t have enough skills and knowledge to save their own life. Conflicts between moral and ration is the most interesting part that I want to know.

I think doctors are normal guys as well; therefore, it’s really hard to deal with these two concepts in the same time. When doctor see blood, they must calm down as soon as possible in order to save patients’ life. However, doctors may encounter some extreme situation which makes them feel sad and miserable. So, audience absolutely will be interested in doctor’s daily life and how their feeling is in their work period. The most interesting part I really want to know is what their attitude is toward patients and how they feel when they save people from hurt. Also, I am a little curious if doctors will think different from others in love. So, this TV series is really successful because it gapes audience’s desire tightly.

  35. The setting of this TV series sets at the hospital, and it usually gives the negative impression to people. Just like the bloody scenes in the films, it not only shows the audience strong image of the operation, but also strengthen the uncertainty of life. Seeing a person lying on the operation table makes me very nervous, I am worried about whether he could keep on surviving or not. Hence, this kind of storyline influences my emotion badly, and I can not help but keep watching the following episodes. On the other hand, the love affair between the interns and the attending physical is also a main factor why this series is so popular. Their on and off relationship manipulates the audience a lot, whether they could have a happy ending is an issue that everyone concerns. They develop their relationship in a place which is full of illness and tears, so they consider each other as a shoulder to rely on. They all know how difficult obstacles are, and they could put themselves in each other’s shoes. Hence, I think that is the reason why the depiction of flirting and courting plays an important role in this series.

  36. (1)I watch some other American TV series myself such as Friends, Sex And The City and Ugly Betty. Actually, I knew this series, Grey's Anatomy, before, but I did not watch it, because I thought it could be boring and serious. However, I fell in love with it after watching it. I was attracted by the humorous dialogue and their busy hospital life.
(2)I think the bloody scenes are not really so many and I can accept it. I think those surgical operations make me better understand the real situation in hospital. As to the love thing, I think it is natural.

  37. 1. Becoming a medical doctor was my biggest dream in my life; however, destiny changed everything for me. For that reason and for the curiosity of how a doctor’s life may look like, I like watching this TV series.

    2. Love and blood show the reality of circumstances that occur in a hospital which involves both doctors and patients, so it is really connected with our daily life. For doctors, dealing with blood seems something natural because they deal with bloody stuffs almost everyday, but that does not mean doctors have no sympathy, they DO have a lot of sympathy as we saw in the TV. series how they were moved emotionally while seeing patients’ and family members worrying about each other. Besides, in the series we also saw most of the doctors had love relationship which shows that they do not only deal with blood, and without love for their patients, colleagues, soul mates, and their lovers, they also can not stand the harsh life in a hospital. The doctors know that they are there to help others and that’s why they are willing to take almost everything naturally. As for the audience, some people including me feel terrified while watching some bloody scenes, but we also feel the love between each individual in the series, we have to realize that they are the realities in a doctor’s live anyway.

  38. I love this TV series. In this TV series, it combines with many elements such as love, friendship, struggle, and so on. As a student, I think I can learn more from Grey's Anatomy. Although these interns face lots of difficulties, they still don’t give up their goals. They try their best to help the sick. Also, they are brave to challenge. For example, Grey is eager to learn more about the baby’s situation even she doesn’t have the right. She still tries to ask the intern more information about the baby. We are always afraid of the failure so that we don’t want to change. When we face difficulties, we just want to flee away. I think no matter what we do, we should be brave to challenge. It’s an opportunity for us to improve ourselves. Like the interns, they view each sick as an opportunity to promote themselves.

  39. I think the trait in this TV series that attract me is about the secrets in hospital. In daily life, we seldom go to hospital and not to mention to know what happen in the operation room. This TV series broaden our field of vision. Actually, I’m a person who is very afraid of seeing sanguinary shots, so I covered my eyes sometimes while I see this TV series. I don’t think there’s any inappropriate for the interns to fall in love with each other. However the only thing they have to remember is that they should be scrupulous in separating public from private interest. In my opinion, those interns are also human beings, so they absolutely have the right to love.

What attracts me the most in this show is that, the show is show so much about our own life about reality of our life which is happening every day in the hospital and we are not known by this. It is about the perfect combination between the story lines, the great music and the couples. The story is really very good I think Grey's is so popular because the way the writer wrote it in a smart way. There are always connection between patients and the doctors. And the way he shows us how much they care about their work and how much they are honest with their works. The characters in the show are very great, it almost feels like they are real doctors and everything is real…
I think doctors learned how to love to save peoples live and it can’t be done with out love to love their patients, their life and to be strong. It is sad to see people are dying or when we see they are sick, or have accidents. But we also fell happy when they save ones lives. And the great thing in the show which makes the audience to continue watching the show is the couples, as I guess.

  41. I like this series which is so interesting and exciting to me. From this series I can realize be a doctor is not easy because they have to accept many kinds of challenges. And those challenges are so terrible and unbelievable to everyone. They have to save many people and watch people die, that is so difficult to feel. Therefore, I can feel doctor is a difficult job. However, I can enjoy those plots in the series, which can let me to feel the real conditions. This is my second love of series after I watched friends. All in all, I want to keep going to enjoy this series.

  42. As english majored students, we have to know some proper nouns from every fields; so that we could know everything easily. I like the stories that always showing the compassion of mankind. In ER what they met were bad injuried patients. Nomatter how low the survival rate is, they won't give up untill hudreds times of CPR. And the tempo of the series is fast and have two stroies in each section. I really enjoy to watch these, but sometime is too bloody; it's hard for me to eat anything while i was watching the series.

The love stories must included in this kind of TV series, because with love stories we won't stretch taut all the time. I like the stroy that can make us happy, sad, angry, joy; we could follow the stroy easily. 96540334 Paula

  43. this is my first time seeing this kind of episode, and I realize that the real life in this society. This society is just like a cruel, chaotic, and disordered jungle; only the strong side can survive, and the weak side will be eliminated. And I believe if we cannot be the strong side, we will definitely be failed by this world. so this episode helps me realize this true world. this is the main point why I am attracted by this episode.

I found that in this episode, when the doctor do the surgery, they do it out of one purpose, LOVE! they save people's life without any payback. why? it's all about love. But if they fail on their surgery, the relatives of the patient will blame the doctor, and they will call him as murderer. that's the bloody part of the medical science.

  44. To be honest, this is my first time watching Grey's Anatomy. I know this TV series on the youtube. I was looking for some good songs. Then I found “how to save a life” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee1TkygONOk here!! I found the MV was about a TV series called Grey's Anatomy. That is how I know it. Actually, the song attracted me more than the TV drama did before I watched some episode in the class. The song activated my thought when I was studying SLA. However, I really enjoyed watching the Grey's Anatomy in the class.
The struggle in the Grey's Anatomy is indeed the same thing we encounter in everyday life. Therefore, the audience is connected with the Grey's Anatomy more closely. In addition, the scenes of bloody body dissections are impressive to everyone though some might feel uncomfortable about this. There are also love loaded plots in it. Blood and love is essential to human. In all, the real things in the Grey's Anatomy are the main reason of its pupularity

  45. I think the reason why this American TV Series GREY'S ANATOMY is so prevalent among people is that the TV series show audience the reality in surgery room. We know what really happens when the patients undergo the operation. Also, for us, we can learn lots of medical vocabularies in this TV series.

As for the blood and love, I think love is very common in all TV series, dramas, but we can rarely see blood in TV series. Actually, I am afraid to see blood, so I kind of dislike when it apeears blood.

  47. I think it helps me understand more about the unfamiliar field though it might be a little bit dramatic;after all, it's a TV series. To me, there's one thing that attracts me in this TV series;that is, every interns are struggling to become a real doctor, and through this process the story lines spread. As for the bloody scene and love affairs, I think it's totally fine with the audience. It's just like why many people like to read gossip magazines.

  48. (1) I really like the design of the characters that they all have different personalities and their interactions are rather vivid and humorous. The operation room is like a condensed society, and the interns and residents represent people of different background and thinking. Plus, even though the setting of this series is in a hospital, the way the narrator (Grey) speaks is just like telling a story, which somehow adds a sense of fairytale-like warmth to the plot and keep the audience believe that everything is going to turn out just fine.
    (2) Blood and love are the two elements that people are curious about but fear to talk or face in the reality. However, in the series, it opens the door of the operation room and allow the audience to look at the almost-real life-saving (sometimes life-killing though) scenes without being anesthetized. We get to discover the story behind each case and learn the real emotions of the doctors who usually regarded as rational and detached. The bloody scenes catch the attention and the love affairs get people involved, and that’s why we always watch one episode after another and another.

  49. In this TV series, what impressed me was mostly the moving and touching scenes. However, I think those series have a theme that tries to bring the awareness or convey messages to the public. The occupation to work in the hospital is always the dream job. Yet when you’re in this competitive environment, you get less positive about it. You’ll probably find out that the doctor you once admire and regard as a hero because he has saved so many people will no longer that admirable. We’re often fantasized by things that look good and always be positive about it. Yet, once we’re part of it or get the chance to witness it, we often end up realizing the truth. There are jealousy, competition among the peer, and there are selfish people who care only for their goal and disregard the rest of the thing, ignoring affairs nothing of their business even at the cost of sacrificing the innocent patient’s life. In this environment, you are forced to choose between reaching your goal solely or being yourself-- like Meredith and Izzie who are totally selfless and respect each patient’s life and right to live. What they see is not goal but their passion for the job. For me, this series serves as the faculty to convey those messages and realities. Those are something we should learn, especially when we seem to live in a world where people care only about themselves, and something we would face in the near future when we’re in the workplace. As for the blood and love, I think they’re not only the parts making the series attractive to the audience but serves as a contrast role to each other. Love makes us feel secured while the blood makes us sympathized. Yet either one is indispensible to our life.

  50. 1.It’s my second time to watch this TV series. Although there’re so many technical terms in the episode, the audience is still able to enjoy the story in that it creates an atmosphere which is not that “medical” although all the characters are doctors and nurses. There are always two or three incidents happen in one episode which makes the whole story more exciting; moreover, the dialogue among the characters are nothing more than what we would have in real life. What’s more, it unveils the life of doctors, although it might be overexaggerated which perfectly fulfills our curiosity.
2.Both love and blood are two aspects that humans eager to know about but are shy fear to talk about. In this TV series, it boldly shows its audience bloody scenes to allow its audience to know what may happen in an emergency room and how would people work in hospital interact with one another.

  51. (1)The marked traits that attract me in this TV series are their complicated relationship. It makes me feel curious about the development between their interactions. They (the characters in this TV series) might encounter astray, but they have to make their decision which would be the best/worst to determine their future. Even though this TV series is too exaggerated to present the fact, I was still attracted by its arrangement that I cannot figure out the plots.
    (2) I know there still some shadows which I do not understand in the hospital, just like every career that they have their darkness in their area, and that is what we cannot understand. I think it might reflect us about the reality. There are too many things that cannot help by ourselves.

  52. this series make me understand how much stress a surgeon is supposed to take on with so many urgent situations and problems that need to be handled or tacled properly. that's why a intern need to be bound as an apprentise for a long while a minor mistake could extend to be a big one. therefore, through this TV series, we can understand the hard time a intern have to go through, which is known to few people. therefore, that's why it is so popular.

  53. 7. I think that Grey's Anatomy is also a famous TV series around the world just like as friends. For me, it is very interesting, exciting, even a little bit of terrible because hospital’s life and tough are what I don't know. For those doctors, they always anticipate on surgeries because their duty is save patients’ live and they have to be trusted by their patients. In Grey's Anatomy, I can see love which are between patients and their family, and the love between those residents. With those love, hospital can be full of hope and fun. 96540305 Cherry

  54. When I watched this series of show at the first sight, I think it is too bloody to me, but I was taken in the world later because of the storyline. It is interesting to see the relationship between Grey and her co-workers. They are friends, meanwhile, they are rivals. Each of them has to be outstanding to get the doctor’s position. I am not the person who is easily be touched, but when I saw the show, I always can’t help being touching. The show indicates many situations people might encounter in the reality. Sometimes we can do nothing, but we should still try out best to do it.

  56. One trait which attracts me is the depiction of love between the patients’ families. I am now studying in Taipei, living far away from my family. I have learned the importance of family more than how much I have learned back in my hometown. Although the distance between my family and I is further, the distance between our hearts is closer. It makes me cherish them much more. The long distance does not keep our hearts apart. I am deeply touched by the characters’ love towards each other. I can understand the pain of losing family as well as the joy of having family saved from the death’s hand. I like seeing some characters, like Meredith, Izzie and George, caring the patients as if they were their families. They have showed their great medical ethics.

The two elements, blood and love, are closely related to human-beings. Without blood, a human would be dead. Without love, one’s life would be meaningless. Our blood derive from our parents. They give us love. Both of them are essential to people. People would be thrilled when seeing blood and be delighted when feeling love. Their effect on the audience might be the same as the popular movie, Twilight, which has some bloody scenes and love depiction. And that’s why both works are so famous. They have the two elements that people love to see.
